Journey with the Holy Bible – Day 4 (St Mathew 1:2-5)

Herein we note that the genealogy starts with Abraham. The holy father, St Severus of Antioch mentions in homily 94 that “it wasn’t the angels that our Lord was concerned with but with the descendants of Abraham. Therefore, He had to be made like His brothers in every respect.

Therefore, Christ took upon himself a blood relationship to that nature which fornicated, in order to purify it. He took on that very nature that was sick, in order to heal it. He took on that nature which fell, in order to lift it up”.
(Ref: Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture New testament 1a, Mathew 1-13, Edited by Manloi Simonetti)

These four verses trace the genealogy from Abraham to David. There are, as we shall also see further in the genealogy verses, Jews and gentiles, men and women, saints and sinners, strong and weak in the list. Saints like Abraham teach us to have complete trust in God-a faith that transcends the worldly intellectual faith. Imagine being asked to give one of our very precious to God. And Abraham was asked to bring the blood sacrifice of his own son! Our verse for reflection ends with David who in quite a few instances did overcome with bodily passions and impulsive actions, but who also desperately cried and longed for God’s help as we note in the book of Psalms.
